Private Art Collections is an initiative of the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna, bringing together collections created by the patronage of Austrian high nobility, aristocracy and leading citizens.
The history of these collections is both diverse and fascinating; some having been scattered to the four corners of the world, others amalgamated into other collections. Due to its very size and quality, the principal among these princely collections was undoubtedly the Liechtenstein collection, which had early on been opened to the general public. Alongside it were many others, such as the family collection of the Counts Harrach, the Esterházy collection, the Schönborn-Buchheim collection, the Czernin collection, the Lamberg collection, and the Metternich and Kaunitz collections. With the return of the Prince of Lichtenstein’s collection to Vienna in March 2004, this almost forgotten aspect of Vienna’s rich cultural life was once again back in the spotlight, igniting the idea of bringing together other existing private collections of the Austrian aristocracy and to exhibit them once again in public. Private Art Collections is an exchange platform, a loose association for the organisation of future joint exhibitions. PAC members assist each other in completing the respective collections, in organising joint appearances on the international exhibition scene, and promoting other events including concerts. More recently, a number of other collections from outside Austria, including the Rockox House, have joined the PAC. The Rockox House in co-operation with the Antwerp Museums.

September 2006 saw the Rockox House sign a letter of intent to co-operate with the museums of both the city and province of Antwerp. Together, they represent both quantitatively and qualitatively a significant presence in the municipal, provincial and Flemish museum landscape. They display close interfaces in the way they profile themselves, notably with regard to museum functions and collections. Everybody wants the museums to shoulder their dual responsibilities, namely to
• achieve close, mutual co-operation, and
• stimulate broader co-operation, both with respect to other museums in the city and to heritage factors affecting the province.

The Rockox House and the Historic Houses of Flanders

The Historic Houses of Flanders project was started back in February 2006 by Antwerp Museums (city, province and the Rockox House) in collaboration with the Kasteel van Gaasbeek and supported by the Flemish government. The objective is to develop a network of historic houses in Flanders that serves as both an example of, and a motor for a comprehensive and integrated museum and heritage policy. For further information, visit the Dutch-language website www.historischehuizen.be (English and French websites are under construction).
